Clinical Observation of Intestinal Obstruction

Abstract
An analysis of 203 cases of intestinal abstruction, of which 175 cases were treated surgically, 28 cases non surgically, during the past 10 year from Nov. 1, 1956 to Aug. 31, 1966 at Pusan National University Hospital was presented. The results obtained as follows.
1) The incidence of intestinal obstruction was 0.61%, The decade of life with highest incidence was from 31 to 40 years lod (21.1%), and the ratio of male to female was 2 to 1.
2) The common causes of interinal obstruction were intussusception, (29.7%), post-operative adhesion (24.5%) and neoplasm (16.0%). It would appeared that intussusception was main cause of the intestinal obstruction in Korean.
3) The original operation which caused the post-operative adhesion was bowel resection in 32.1% in these series, appendectomy in 24.3% and gynecological operation in 18.8%.
4) The positive sign in plain X-ray film of the abdomen was 88.2%. The use and interpretation of X-ray film were an important early diagnostic procedure. Clinical sympioms and signs, leucocytosis (64.1%), increased hematocrit (52%) and specific gravity of urine were also helpful for diagnosis.
5) Total mortality in our series was 12.8% and operative mortality was 12.5% in 175 cases. The common causes of death were post-operative shock, (35.3%), peritonitis(22.7%) and pulmonary complication.(13.6%).
6) Author believedthat the age, duration, type and etiology of intestinal obstruction influence the prognosis and early surgical intervention based on early ciagnosis was an important factor for success in these series.
